ABOUT NATALI RUDEN

Natali Ruden is a fashion designer with an original and unique style. She comes from Kiev where she graduated from the prestigious Kiev Academy of Design with specialization in Fashion design. She has followed a family tradition, she chose the same profession like her mother. With her own fashion brand Natali Ruden she has been on our market since 1992 when she moved to the Czech republic for good.

The internet website Natali Ruden introduces her own words describing her perfectly: “I love my job and it is a kind of mission for me. I am vivacious and that´s why I like using bold colours, combining materials. What´s very important for me is also a beautiful line which has fascinated me since I saw the paintings by an Italian artist Modigliani. Everything has to aim at accentuating the beauty of the body and personality.“

How can one become a fashion designer?

I must have inherited some skills. It wouldn´t probably work out without them. My first model for my first portrait was my grandpa. The art teacher praised me for it and gave me the advice to say nothing to anybody as it is the first work. To this day the portrait has been hung in the sitting room and it´s true that it not only defines precisely my grandpa’s appearance but also his personality traits and character.

I am surprised that it is possible to learn how to draw…

Asi jsem k tomu zdědila i nějaké předpoklady. Bez toho by to nejspíš nešlo.

When did you come to Prague and what had preceded it?

It happened in 1992. In fact, it was a coincidence that I met a Czech guy during my studies in Kiev. We got married when we were both still at university. After the graduation, my husband wanted to go back home and I followed him. He started to work in Zlín and four years later we moved to Prague.

Straight after the arrival, you started to design fashion collections. How did you manage to become successful?

I came to Czechoslovakia with a finished diploma collection that I introduced to people in Zlín. I met with positive reactions, people supported me and in 1992 I got the opportunity to show my first collection in the fashion event Elegance Praha. After that, I tried to start my fashion designer career.

What do you like most about your job?

Even after so many years I still love designing new outfits, especially the tailor-made ones for my clients. G. Versace, who I totally identify with, defined it perfectly: “My wish is to give women a chance to reveal their individuality, try to realize what they want. And I think women want to feel beautiful.”

How would you describe your style?

It is difficult. I´m delighted that people evaluate my outfits as interesting, original, with typical handwriting and made of excellent materials. And at the same time as well wearable.

Do women here dress differently to women abroad? Does every nation have its specific style?

Definitely yes, and the fact is that you often recognize where the person comes from according to the style and colourfulness of their clothes. I think it´s the climate. I grew up in Kiev and every day in summer I used to see the azure sky, vivid green trees and glittering golden temple domes from my window. Since my childhood I´ve had this vivid colourfulness and huge contrasts encoded inside me. From this point of view Prague is more sober. Beautiful, but different. Local people have also been looking at its colours since their birth and they bear them inside the way they are. That´s why some people find my outfits very prominent. I have recently softened their colourfulness because I live here and I´m becoming different, I´m becoming the part of the local environment.

How do big evening dresses come into existence?

Before I start designing such a dress, I spend a lot of time speaking with my client. I need to learn what she likes, what she is comfortable in and of course what type of event it is going to be for. We go through many different fabrics and after that I prepare 2 or 3 designs. The outfit is then adjusted during 2 or 3 fittings so the result is one hundred percent.

Are the dresses which you offer in your boutique unique or there is more than one piece from each outfit available?

The outfits are virtually all available only as one original piece. Only exceptionally we repeat some of them but they are made in different hues and rarely as two pieces.

Can you give us an example of celebrities you dress?

There are many of them. I mostly cooperate with Andrea Verešová, Kateřina Brožová and others. My outfits are worn by Lucie Borhyová, Dara Rollins was even the face of my brand. But the most important celebrities are my loyal customers, female customers – the ones who come back and who wear my outfits in everyday life.
